1.Negative Idiom

 




The lesson this time is to learn a collection of idioms where our response is negative sentences

 

Bored to death

Very bored

I have nothing to do. I'm bored to death.

Sick and Tired

Used when you no longer enjoy something because you have done it too many times.

I'm sick and tired of eating the same thing for lunch everyday.

Get on one's nerves         

Used when someone or something is bothering you.

You're beginning to get on my nerves.

Couch potato

Used when someone watches too much television.

My husband is a couch potato. He sits in front of the TV all day long.

Feel blue

Feel sad

What a gloomy day. It makes me feel blue.

Fender bender

A small car accident

I got into a small accident. It was just a fender-bender.

Chicken

Being afraid or scared

There's nothing to be scared of. Don't be a chicken.

Give somebody a hard time

Make someone feel bad for making a mistake.

Suzie gave him a hard time for not showing up to her recital.

Throw in the towel

Give up; quit; surrender

I was ready to throw in the towel, but I stayed with it.

I'm beat

Very tired

I had a tough day today. I'm totally beat.

Over one's head

When something is mentally too difficult to understand.

I don't know the answer to that problem. The subject is over my head.

Pain in the ass

A source of trouble or annoyance;

What a pain in the ass.

Pull someone's leg

Making someone believe something that is not true.

You expect me to believe that? Stop pulling my leg.

Under the weather

Feeling sick; not well

I'm going to stay home because I'm feeling under the weather today.

Broke

To have no money

I'm flat broke.

I Don't Buy it

Disagree; to not be convinced

He said he didn't do it but I don't buy it.

Who Cares

To express something is not important to you.

Who cares if they win or lose?

Big Deal

Something really important. Often times used with "no" to express that the event is not as important as they think.

Passing my driver's test was no big deal.

What's going on?

To ask what is happening

What's going on tonight?

Over My Dead Body

Disallow absolutely

There is no way I will let you do that, not over my dead body.

Nothing Matters

To express nothing else is important

Nothing matters more than being happy.

What gives?

Used to ask what is the matter or what went wrong

It's not like you to get so upset, what gives?

Cat Got Your Tongue

Used when someone has nothing to say

What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?

Good for Nothing

Negative statement to indicate someone has no value; useless

That guy is good for nothing.

Why so Blue?

Asking someone why they are so sad.

Why so blue, is everything ok?

What's Eating You?

Used to ask someone what's bothering them

You're in a bad mood today. What's eating you?

Shame on You

Used to tell someone that they did something wrong

You know better than to do that, shame on you.

Take a Hike

 To tell someone to go away in a negative way

He asked for my phone number and I told him to take a hike.

I'm Hosed

To be screwed; to be out of luck

I didn't finish my report on time. I'm hosed.

I Blew It

Used to tell someone that you made a big mistake

I really thought I was going to get the promotion, but I blew it.

Maddening

Extremely annoying; to make you very mad

Trying to make you happy sometimes is maddening.

I Messed Up

Used to tell someone that you made a mistake

I messed up. I got a ticket for speeding on the highway.

I Beg to Differ

A polite way of disagreeing

I beg to differ. I don't think that is the right way to handle the situation.

Pie in the Sky

Pleasant to imagine but impossible to attain

Her desire to be an actress ended up just being a pie in the sky.

I'm Sick of It

To express that you are tired of something; to express you don't like something anymore

I'm not sure about you, but I'm sick of it!

Get Out of Here

Common way to express disbelief

Get out of here! We actually finished in first place?

Has Been Burned

To get screwed; to get a bad deal; to be tricked

I don't know why he keeps calling her. He's been burned by her numerous times.
