5. Conversation Idioms



 Conversation idioms is a collection of idioms and phrases that are widely used in conversation.

 Stay in touch

 To stay connected

"Call me more often man. We got to stay in touch."

Jump to conclusions

 Making a conclusion without having all the details

"I incorrectly blamed Jeff for breaking my phone. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions."

I can eat a horse

 To express the desire to eat a lot of food.

"I'm so hungry that I can eat a horse."

Read between the lines

 To understand the underlying meaning of something that is not completely clear.

"If you read between the lines, you would have understood what he was implying."

Bug

 To annoy

"I need to concentrate on this, so stop bugging me."

Speak of the devil

 When someone appears just as you are talking about that person.

"I was at a party last night, and I saw Jake play the guitar in front of an audience... speak of the devil, there's Jake right now."

Grab a bite

 To get something to eat

"When do you want to go grab a bite?"

You can say that again

 Completely agreeing with a statement

What a Small World

 Used when a person knows someone you know by chance

"I didn't know that you knew my uncle. What a small world."

Now You're Talking

 Used to agree with someone

"A cold drink sounds great, now you're talking!"

Shoot

 A type of exclamation

"Shoot, I forgot my grocery list at home."

Stop It!

 To ask someone to stop what they are doing.

"Please stop it! You're giving me a headache."

It Totally Slipped My Mind

 To forget something that you had to do

"I was meaning to call you but it totally slipped my mind."

You're Telling Me

 Agreeing with someone

"You're telling me, that book was one of the best I've ever read."

Don't Joke With Me

 Used when asking someone to be serious

"He told me she likes me but I said don't joke with me."

I Can't Thank You Enough

 To be very thankful

"I can't thank you enough for all that you have done for me."

Just Name It

 Used to express that you are offering to do or give anything the other person asks

"I will help you with whatever you need, just name it."

 

Nature Calls

 This is used when you have to go to the bathroom. Usually referred to pee (#1) and not poop (#2).

"Can you pull the car over at a rest stop as soon as you can? Nature calls!"

I Owe You

 Similar to giving someone a debt coupon

"I don't have any money so can I get an I owe you."

It's a Long Story

 Used when you don't want to talk about something, if it is difficult to talk about; or if it is hard to explain

"I know you want to know what happened but it's a long story."

You Wish

 Used to tell someone that they will not get what they want.

"You want straight A's like her? You wish!"

Do Tell

 A slang way of telling someone to tell you what they know.

"You heard about that rumor already? Do tell."

I Couldn't Agree With You More

 To completely agree with someone

"I couldn't agree with you more, this place is beautiful."

Thank Goodness

 Expression to indicate relief

"Thank goodness this dress still fits, I have nothing else to wear."

You Made It

 To succeed at something; to arrive

"I can't believe you made it. It was a difficult task."

Whatever

 An expression used to indicate you don't believe the other person

"Whatever, I know you like him."

You Never Know

 Expressing that the unlikely could happen

"I don't think I'll get the job but you never know."

Just My Luck

 Expression used when something bad happens to you

"That's just my luck, I never win at anything."

Hop In

 Used to tell someone to get in the car

"Hop in. You can ride with me to the grocery store."

I Told You So

 This is used when you already told someone something and it came true

"I knew that was a bad idea, I told you so."

You Know Better Than That

 Used when someone makes a mistake that they shouldn't have made

"Mary said you were rude to her, you know better than that."

Keep Me in the Loop

 To be informed about everything regarding that subject

"I really want to know what happens so keep me in the loop."

Get to the Point

 Used when someone is not providing the piece of information that is the most important.

"Can you please get to the point? You're taking forever."

Sure Thing

 To express that you will do something

"You want me to call you tomorrow? Sure thing."
